Tracing Lines
Tracing Lines is a 30x40” photo print that uses computer vision to detect law
enforcement officers from online videos of migration protests. When the piece is viewed
through a mobile device, the image comes to life revealing a short augmented reality video. 

Andrés will work with online found footage of recent protests, where the government has shown a
disproportionate use of force against peaceful demonstrators. Through AI-powered facial
recognition, government agencies identify protesters and track them to their homes for

Migrant Shelter Pedagogy

Migrant Shelter Pedagogy examines learning practices and knowledge sharing that take place in 
migrant shelters or spaces that support migrants throughout Sonora, Mexico. Despite extensive 
literature on migration on the U.S/ Mexico border, there has been little attention paid to how 
migrant shelters can be viewed as pedagogical and transformative spaces of learning and activism.

As someone whose environmental education began in Baku and continues in Tucson,
Arif has always been drawn to how people interpret place and how culture, language, and
environment shape identity. Arif's academic work in sustainable built environments has evolved
into a central question that guides much of his research and creative practice: how can design
and technology help people reconnect to the landscapes that sustain them?
